Waist

Your waist is the bottom of the V. Over 12 weeks, it's the part that changes most.

A tighter waist sharpens the angle. Here's how your waist shapes your V, what changes it, and six core moves the app uses.

What your waist does for your V

Your taper ratio is your shoulder width over your waist width. A smaller waist raises it just as wider shoulders do, and over 12 weeks the waist is the side that moves.

Core training makes your middle stronger and steadier. It doesn't burn fat from your waist: for adults, the app's calorie target does that.

If you're 16 or 17, the app sets no calorie deficit and no weight goal. Your plan trains your core and fuels your training.

How the app measures it

In your front photo, the app measures your waist at its narrowest, between your lowest ribs and your hips, and compares it with your body's height from shoulders to hips. A fixed formula turns that into a waist score from 0 to 100.

For an exact number, the app has a tape-measure mode, and your plan uses the tape number where you have one.

How the score works

Core moves for your waist

Six of the 10 waist exercises in the app. In the app each one has a demo clip, and your plan sets the sets and reps for you.

  • Demo still: front plank.
    • Waist · Bracing
    • Bodyweight
    • Home + gym

    Front plank

    1. Forearms on the floor, elbows under your shoulders.
    2. Body in a straight line from head to heels.
    3. Squeeze your glutes and pull your ribs down.
    4. Breathe steadily. Stop when your hips sag.

Safety: Trains the core. It doesn't burn fat from the waist: the calorie target does that. Past 45 s, move to a harder version rather than holding longer.

    Common mistakes
    • Hips sagging or piked up.
    • Holding your breath.

Swap for: dead bug, hollow hold, cable Pallof press.

  • Demo still: side plank.
    • Waist · Side bracing
    • Bodyweight
    • Home + gym

    Side plank

    1. Lie on your side, elbow under your shoulder, feet stacked.
    2. Lift your hips so your body forms a straight line.
    3. Hold, breathing steadily.
    4. Switch sides.

Safety: Trains the core. It doesn't burn fat from the waist: the calorie target does that. Easier: knees bent on the floor.

    Common mistakes
    • Hips sagging toward the floor.
    • Rolling forward.

Swap for: suitcase carry, cable Pallof press, front plank.

    2. Press your lower back into the floor.
    3. Slowly lower one arm and the opposite leg toward the floor.
    4. Return and switch sides.

Safety: Trains the core. It doesn't burn fat from the waist: the calorie target does that.

    Common mistakes
    • Lower back arching off the floor.
    • Moving fast.

Swap for: front plank, hollow hold, bird dog.

  • Demo still: cable Pallof press.

    1. Set a handle at chest height and stand side-on to the cable.
    2. Hold the handle at your chest with both hands, feet shoulder-width.
    3. Press it straight out and hold two seconds. Don't let it turn you.
    4. Bring it back to your chest. Do all reps, then switch sides.

Safety: Trains the core. It doesn't burn fat from the waist: the calorie target does that.

    Common mistakes
    • Rotating toward the cable.
    • Standing so close there's no tension.

Swap for: band Pallof press, side plank, suitcase carry.

  • Demo still: band Pallof press.
    • Waist · Anti-rotation

    Common mistakes
    • Twisting toward the anchor.
    • Standing so close there's no tension.

Swap for: cable Pallof press, side plank, suitcase carry.

    • Leaning to one side.
    • Shrugging the loaded shoulder.

Swap for: side plank, cable Pallof press, band Pallof press.

What 12 weeks can change

What published studies found, in plain numbers. They studied adult men, so read them as a rough guide, not a promise.

Waist

1.0 to 1.2 cm per kg

Average and heavier men lost about 1.0 to 1.2 cm of waist for each kg of fat they lost.

Hunt 2014, Lancet · Foulis 2023, Front Physiol

Lean men

No study yet

We found no study of waist change in men who were already lean. Expect less per kg than the number above.

Week to week

About ±1.2 cm

In a study of 3-D phone scans, the waist repeated within about 1.2 cm, and a waist varies about 3 % from day to day on its own. One week's change is mostly noise.

Nácher-Fernández 2026, J Int Soc Sports Nutr · Nordhamn 2000, Int J Obes

So your waist trend needs several weekly scans: the app shows it from your 6th scan, counting your sign-up scan, which is your 5th weekly check-in.

If you're 16 or 17, the app sets no calorie deficit and shows no projections.
