Shoulder-to-waist ratio

Two tape measurements, one number: your shoulder circumference divided by your waist. It works out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves this page.

For ages 16 and up. General guidance, not medical advice.

What this number is

A tape ratio

Shoulder circumference divided by waist circumference, both measured around the body with a tape. Same units on both, so the units cancel out.

Not the app's scan ratio

The taper ratio in the app compares widths, shoulders to waist, measured from your photos. Widths and circumferences give different numbers, so don't compare the two.

Not a V-Taper Score

The V-Taper Score comes from the app's scan, by a fixed formula across your zones. Two tape numbers can't stand in for it, so this page doesn't make one.

How the score works

No ideal number

Many calculators grade you against the "golden ratio" as the ideal V-taper. It's a convention from maths and art, with no evidence behind it as a target for bodies. We don't grade you against it, or against anything.

What moves it in 12 weeks

For adults, mostly the waist. Shoulder bone doesn't change, and delts add millimetres per cycle. If you're 16 or 17, the app sets no calorie deficit and shows no projections.

What 12 weeks can change

Measure it right

The same steps the app uses. A tape that slips or a held breath often throws the number off.

Illustration: a tape around the widest point of the shoulders, level all the way round.

Shoulders

  • Widest point of the shoulders
  • Level all the way round
  • Ends meet at the front

With a partner

Stand relaxed, arms by your sides. Your partner wraps the tape around the widest point of your shoulders, level all the way round.

Solo

Hold the tape end on your chest, loop it behind you over the widest point of your shoulders, and check in a mirror that it sits level.

Illustration: a tape around the waist at the navel, level and snug.

Waist

  • At the navel
  • Relaxed, not sucked in

With a partner

Stand relaxed and breathe out normally. Your partner wraps the tape around your waist at belly-button height, level and snug, not tight.

Solo

Breathe out normally. Wrap the tape around your waist at belly-button height, check in a mirror that it's level, snug but not tight.

Track it weekly in the app

Save your tape numbers with each weekly scan, next to the photo estimates. Your plan uses the tape number where you have one.
